The name of
Gerry Schultz is well known among goalies from Western Canada. This
Edmonton mask maker fitted pros and amateurs in the Edmonton area
throughout the Sixties and Seventies. His clients included WHA and
NHL goalies such as Ken Brown, Chris Worthy, Jack Norris and most
notably Grant Fuhr (his first Oilers masks).
Gary,
I found a couple of newspaper pictures of my first mask that I wore
in 1960-61 when I played with the University of Alberta. You asked
if I had pictures of my original mask so I am sending them as
attachments with this email.
This particular mask was smooth as it was a hand lay-up using about
10 layers of 10 ounce cloth. This is the only mask I made
exclusively of "cloth." Succeeding masks were made up of
combinations of materials (cloth, mat, rovings, kevlar, dynel) and I
started using a vacuum mold process in 1962. With the exception of
about four or five epoxy masks I used polyester resins with
flexible additive. I experimented with a cage, on a fiberglass shell
idea, in 1962-63 but gave up as a decent cage was not available to
me at that time.
I notice on your website that I am still listed as being in the
modern era. I believe I was the first goalie in western Canada to
wear a mask.
Yours truly,
G. Schultz
